Cabin
Here's something completely different; it's a commission I did last summer. This painting was done as a gift for my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary. My uncle built this cabin himself, from trees there on the property (in Oregon). It is a place they love and spend a lot of time in, and it required a special painting. I had never seen it in person; this was done from a variety of photos taken and sent to me by my cousins. My mom and I flew out a couple of days before the anniversary party, and my aunt and uncle took us on a big drive up into the mountains to show us the cabin. Little did they know I had already "seen" it! I couldn't even look at my mom as we were driving up to it; I was afraid I would start grinning and give away the surprise! We had such a fun time, and I was happy I could contribute in this way.

Leslie, what a great story. The painting is charming. They're going to treasure it.
always wanted to build my own log cabin!
great painting!
That's a really cool surprise! I think the painting turned out great, it really gives off a tranquil vibe.
They were thrilled with it! It was a little touch and go when they were trying to remove the wrapping paper. I think it was my aunt who asked for a knife...that got a big reaction from the crowd!
: )
Hi David! My uncle learned all those skills when he was growing up; he is a real outdoorsman and it was a treat to learn all about the different trees and plants while I was up there. I was happy that the painting captured the spirit of the place. Thanks!
Cool story! Great job on the painting too.
Thanks BG! When we were up there, we were all just sitting quietly and several deer walked right by the cabin. It is really something, you just hear the hum of insects sometimes birds chirping.
Thanks Craig! It was a challenge because I had to be really accurate without having seen it for myself. I knew they would notice if anything was out of place on the cabin. A few trees are missing, though (artistic license). I was really lucky to have great reference photos.
wow, really good and so different...again...anything you can't paint?
love the pines,very convincing!
Thanks, Rob! I think learning to paint people would be my next big challenge.
This is great. You should be very happy with it, imo. I bet your aunt and uncle are!
They are really enjoying the painting. Thanks for the comment, it was a really challenging one for me-so glad it all came together!
